Fujitsu to provide cloud based disaster recovery for Ankabut members

To go live in March 2018, the Fujitsu solution will support Ankabut members with advanced disaster recovery and data protection capability.

Fujitsu has won the contract to offer its secure, cost-effective and cloud-based Disaster Recovery as a Service DRaaS solution to Ankabut, the UAE’s Advanced National Research and Education Network that offers academic institutions connectivity to other educational networks globally.

To go live in March 2018, the Fujitsu solution will support Ankabut members and the wider UAE higher education community with advanced IT disaster recovery and data protection capability that meet their needs at a lower cost and in a shorter timeframe. The DRaaS solution offered by Fujitsu is compliant with auditory requirements and in line with data confidentiality and sovereignty standards expected of educational institutions.

Through a pay-per-usage model, Fujitsu is providing a secure, resilient, and cost-effective cloud-based DRaaS that enables organisations of all sizes to safeguard their business-critical data and minimise downtime. The agreement enables Fujitsu to expand its global commitment to high quality cloud service delivery.

With this DRaaS solution, the physical IT and virtual systems of Ankabut members are replicated to a secure cloud environment hosted in the UAE. This will cover all applications, email, data and network configurations. In the event of any disaster that leads to system crashes and data loss, the disaster recovery environment can be quickly activated, taking over from the internal IT systems within minutes. The data and applications will also fail back at any time from the cloud to the original location once the disaster is resolved.

DRaaS is easy to set up and maintain, and serves as a low-coast alternative to a hardware-based disaster recovery solution. The cost of operation is on an Opex basis and with flexible subscription solutions and transparent pricing, Ankabut members only pay for the service elements that their business requires.

Dr Fahem Al Nuaimi CEO of Ankabut, said: “Our vision is to create the opportunity for the UAE to be a global leader in research and education by providing leading edge network infrastructure to the centres of learning and research. One of our core offerings is DRaaS, now being delivered through Fujitsu. This will guarantee performance and consistency for our members, with all their critical computing services remaining available to users during any failures or outages. The pay-per-usage model ensures that every member, even small-sized institutions can benefit from superior disaster recovery capability.”

Farid Al-Sabbagh, VP and Managing Director at Fujitsu Middle East, said: “This demonstrates our breadth of expertise in Hybrid IT and Cloud, and supports the vision of Ankabut by offering its members and the wider UAE higher education community with a reliable and cost-effective IT disaster recovery and data protection capability. In an environment of system vulnerabilities that are unprecedented, the solution offers them peace of mind that their data is secure at all times.”

Ankabut is an initiative of Khalifa University that aims to offer Quality of Service based networks with IPv4 IPv6, multicast and introduce advanced services on a Closed Group Network with Public Interest Purposes.

Fujitsu’s commitment to high quality cloud service delivery is evidenced in the latest Gartner Magic Quadrant reports for Data Center Outsourcing and Infrastructure Utility Services, Managed Hybrid Cloud Hosting and Cloud Infrastructure as a Service IaaS. Offering the most complete portfolio in the market, Fujitsu’s Traditional Data Center and Hybrid Infrastructure underlines its ability to successfully combine Cloud deployments with legacy, traditional and Infrastructure Utility managed services. Its global IaaS presence as a result of Cloud Service K5 is the most open, compatible and agile cloud platform available, designed for digital transformation.

Fujitsu promotes a Human Centric Intelligent Society, in which innovation is driven by the integration of people, information and infrastructure.
